Zusammenfassung: Subject of this Master-Thesis is the restoration and conservation of a previously prepared an varnished
crocodile skin. The biological preparation of the object produces the scientific foundation for further research
or presentation as an exhibit in a museum. As the object is very rare it is important to preserve the
information which it encloses. The object has been damaged in this case, due to the fact that it has not been
adequately stored and transported. As a consequence, the crocodile skin is very heavily distorted and the
varnish layer has detached itself from the scales. This Thesis classifies the object to be historical art and
documents the progression and processes used, during restoration. It also describes the composition of
reptile skin, discusses the differences between crocodile leather and the addressed skin in this Thesis. A
divagating chapter covers the history of the preparation method used and also includes other possible
procedures. Concluding this Thesis, there is a debate of how the exhibit can be presented.
