Zusammenfassung: | This master thesis deals with the description and assessment of the condition of the severely damaged painting fragments in the ossuary of the Michaelskapelle in Oberwesel, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The chapel built in mid-14th century, is one of the few examples of independent two-storey ossuary chapels in the Rhineland. The ossuary contains unique gothic, figural wall paintings as well as an original altar, decorated with a red ashlar paintings. The chapel and the painting fragments will be presented with regard to the architectural and art-historical context and reconstructed with the help of sketches. Main emphasis will be on the investigation of the original painting techniques and the analyses of the applied materials. Furthermore the examination will concentrate on the analyses of the paintings condition and a liquid moisture survey of the surrounding parameters. This observation includes climate measurements and the documentation of painting surface abrasion. In order to prevent further severe damages of the paintings, which were mainly caused by moisture, a safeguarding concept has been developed and tested on a reference area. |
