Zusammenfassung: | In the attic of the parish church of St. Andrew in Senftenberg (Lower Austria), the fragment of a monumental portrayal of Saint Christopher has been preserved. The painting is situated on the former south facade of the chancel and was covered up by the addition of the southern chapel and today’s registry, as well as, perhaps, destroyed below the added arch even then today; only about one third of the original building substance is in place. The visible painting shows Saint Christopher with Christ Child as well as a significantly smaller, entirely preserved figure of Saint Erasmus. The mounting of electric installations has caused further fragmentation of the substance; however, numerous shards of plastering, partially including painting, were left behind. Besides the conservation measures, as the small-scale consolidation of plastering and painting substance as well as cleaning and removal of micro-organisms, the main objective of the work was to improve the portrayal’s legibility. The disruption caused by the massive surface defect was reduced as far as possible; in addition, fragments of the painting have been readjusted. |
