Zusammenfassung: | This master thesis deals with the research on the panel painting of Duke Heinrich Julius (1601) and its associated frame, both of which belong to the Historical Museum Hannover. As a result of the very high temperatures to which the painting was exposed after the bombing of Hannover during the Second World War, the object suffered changes and damages. The most significant ones are darkening of the oil paint films at the panel painting and loss of painting layers at the frame. The main aim of this master thesis is to describe the technical structure of the object as well as the heat-induced changes and their specific causes. On this purpose, an overview of information related to heat- or fire-induced damages of paintings taken from particular literature is firstly given. Two options for the treatment of recovery of color in scorched oil paints are presented. Finally, a proposal for conservation and restoration treatment is made on the basis of ethical principles, as well as for the future presentation of this heat-damaged object. |
