Zusammenfassung: | The appropriate care of contemporary outdoor sculptures requires a high level of continuous supervision and maintenance. Thereby, the principles of conservation ethics need to be honoured in equal measure to the inside museum space. Focusing on safeguarding the original materiality of the object only, may fail to preserve the meaning of outdoor sculptures. Also other factors as functionality, intention and presentation context can be important vehicles of meaning. Therefore, the development of an adequate conservation strategy requires the weighing of different factors. It may be impossible to do equal justice to all aspects of originality and authenticity simultaneously. Therefore the ethical principles retain their value as guiding values, however they may need to be weighed against other goals and purposes of conservation. This work proposes recommendations that may help optimizing this determination process. Documentation and archiving of primary and secondary materials may play a key role in this regard. |
