Zusammenfassung: | The monumental 19th century water glass mural paintings by the Irish painter Daniel Maclise in the Royal Gallery, House of Lords, Westminster Palace, London, are the subject of the present master’s thesis. Their present condition, the causes of deterioration and their physical histories have been assessed, analysed and evaluated; and related to diverse past interventions on the paintings. The overriding impairment of these monumental wall paintings is their limited legibility due to the painted surfaces being obscured by past surface treatments. Their present appearance and the impact this has on the viewers have been investigated and described. The aim and objective is the development of a strategy of conservation to prevent further deterioration. Also, the future presentation options were the subject of detailed deliberations focussed on lighting, and in particular experimentation on-site with LED based sources of illumination. As a result of this work, a proposal for their future presentation has been prepared. The documentation consists of the written report, the photographic images and the mapping of both mural paintings. |
