Zusammenfassung: Due to of the fire of the historical building of the Herzogin Anna Amalia library in Weimar on 2nd September 2004, among other things, 2200 cloth bindings of the 19th and 20th century were damaged. The books were exposed to extreme exogenous conditions like heat, fire fighting water, salvage and the freeze-drying process.
Remarkable is the large number of deformed book covers in the inhomogenous library collection. The covers are often so much out of shape, that further use or integration in the magazin of these books is not longer possible.
The intention of this Master Thesis is it to develop a concept and a procedure for the treatment of deformed cloth-bindings. The usability is to be restored by a practicable, effective and economical method, working with controlled humidity entry and drying processes. The variety of materials used for in book covers has to be considered as well as their original surface textures.
A humidification cushion will be generated and tested for its practicability.
