Zusammenfassung: | Subject of the present paper is the technology of oil paint coating and linseed impregnation of natural stone. The conversatinal effect of oil paint coating on natural stone is called into question. The history of colourfulness of architecture is not addressed in depth. Part of this work was the examination of ten metopes of the Brandenburg Gate, whose damage may be related to the historical oil coatings of the stone surface. Various historical sources on coating techniques used in the past with linseed oil were evaluated. The collected techniques were compared to the available information on the construction and restoration history of the Brandenburg Gate. By means of a series of laboratory tests and a comparison with other application examples, the suitability of oil paint as a preservative was assessed. |
