Zusammenfassung: | This thesis provides a short historical description of the fragmentary wall hangings in the “Saal” of the Stadtmuseum in Einbeck. Dating back of the late 17th to early 18th century, the late baroque canvas hangings found a second use in the “Saal”. In the 1960s, the object was removed from its previous context, cut into several pieces and stored in the attic. Four fragments have been hung up on the wall and spread out in the “Saal” again, however, in a different context. In 2006, after the retrieval of the remaining fragments in the attic, a first paper was composed on the history of wall hangings in general and of this object in particular. The condition and the remaining stock of the fragments were registered, named and mapped. The results of that paper serve as a basis for this thesis which aims at expanding the examination and developing a tailor made concept for the technical proceedings and conditions for respreading and rehanging these particular fragments once again. Besides the conservatory measures of cleaning, consolidation, planishing and bridging of tears the concept comprises a lining applying the method of “Geweberasterhaftung”. The wall hangings will be mounted on frames with a supporting backing. After the concept of conservation, the consequences for the building are described, which are important for rehanging and respreading the wall hangings. Subsequently, reflections and recommendations for a later presentation are shown. The paper concludes with a summary of the acquired knowledge and a view over future conserving and restoring methods. |
