Zusammenfassung: This bachelor thesis concerns the exterior of the Church of St. John the Baptist, Inglesham, Wiltshire, England. The paper begins with a general summary of the history of the building, followed by an extensive description of the exterior. The construction techniques, the nature of the building materials and the amount and type of damage and deterioration are described in detail. Samples were taken to distinguish the different historical phases. Measurements were made of the porosity (using the Mirowski method), electrical conductivity, electric capacity, surface temperature and climate.
The interpretation of these results is followed by a critical examination and evaluation of the overall condition. A special focus of this study is the microbiological attack on the architectural surface by lichens. Two areas of the facade were used for tests to demonstrate possible methods and materials for cleaning and disinfection of the surface to reduce this type of damage. Taking into account the results of all the investigations, practical examples were made within a selected area to demonstrate four possibilities of presenting the external surface. The paper concludes with an evaluation of the concepts presented for lasting care and preservation of the facade.
