Zusammenfassung: This Bachelor Thesis deals with the microbial colonization of consolidation products based on silicic acid. In a series of tests silicic acid ester (tetra alkoxysilane) and a silicic-sol were examined for possible microbial growth. Samples consisting of lime mortar were treated with consolidation products. After one week and after three weeks of setting, the samples were inoculated with three different fungi (Aspergillus glaucus, Aspergillus versicolor and Penicillium chrysogenum). To prove possible connections of the colonization, the microorganisms were inoculated in three different parts of the samples. After four weeks the growth of the fungi was analysed by using a scanning electron microscope and by a coloured perjodic-acid-schiff-reaction. The results show that a microbial colonization of the silicic acid ester is possible when it is not completely setted as well as in the dilute silicic-sol-solution itself.
Furthermore, objects that were treated with tetramethoxy silane in the past were examined for microbial growth. In general, the historical surfaces did not have any active microbial colonization.
