Abstract: | This master`s thesis focuses on two larger-than-life-sized polychrome stone sculptures of Mary and Jesus Salvator which date back to the late middle ages and are located in the Church St. Ursula in Cologne, Germany. Both sculptures were examined regarding their origin, their manufacturing process, their alterations and their condition. Based on these investigations, the manufacturing date of the columns of the sculptures was adjusted. Additionally the discovered applied brocade and red glazed tin-relief on Mary and the redlake-azurite-composite on Christ`s robe can be classified as an extraordinary feature. After describing the sculptures and surveying their condition a proposal for conservation was developed. Besides addressing improvements of the appearance, this proposal also focuses on preserving the sculptures. |
