Overview:

Abstract: This thesis focuses on the microbiological assessment and conservation treatment of contaminated paper fragments from the Dombibliothek Hildesheim. The objective was to develop and evaluate a gentle and object-appropriate approach to stabilising fragile archival materials by combining classical dry-cleaning methods with modern diagnostic and testing techniques.
Microbial contamination was assessed using adhesive tape lifts, culture-based analysis, and ATP/AMP bioluminescence measurements. Results indicated partially high initial contamination levels, which were significantly reduced through conservation cleaning. Additionally, the application of a cold atmospheric plasma device (PiezoBrush® PZ3) was tested but proved ineffective in removing textile reinforcements under the given conditions.
