| Abstract: | The following master´s thesis addresses the technological examination of the portrait painting “Fürstbischof Ferdinand von Fürstenberg II” and the subsequent development of a conservation and restoration concept. The object is currently stored in the local museum of the village Bevergern, the “Heimathaus”, behind an information panel in the city-exhibition, and is said to depict Prince-Bishop Ferdinand II of Fürstenberg, who played a significant role in the history of Bevergern. Currently, there are no plans to display the object; however, the possibility of its presentation will be reconsidered after the completion of the measures discussed in this thesis. At present, the painting is nailed from the reverse side onto the decorative frame and therefore experiences no tension. Furthermore, the textile support is at risk due to patches, deformations, open tears, and an active insect infestation in the decorative frame. In addition, parts of the image are obscured by the decorative frame and a heavily yellowed varnish alters the aesthetic perception of the painting. The aim of this thesis is to develop a concept whose catalogue of measures will ensure that the painting can be stored in a stable condition and, through significant aesthetic improvement, facilitate a renewed appreciation that will enable its presentation in the near future. Specifically, the thesis consists of an explanation of the current state of research on the object, followed by tabular identification and classification within the art and cultural-historical context. The examination of the object is then divided into the technological investigation of all its facets, followed by a description of the current condition, i.e., damages and alterations. Based on this, a conservation and restoration concept is developed, followed by a report on measures already carried out within the timeframe of the thesis. Finally, a prospect is given on how further measures within the concept are to be implemented, and the thesis is concluded with a discussion in the final chapter. |
