| Abstract: | Ammonium phosphate solutions were investigated for their suitability and potential in the passivation and consolidation of weathered calcitic and gypsum-containing substrates. The aim was to identify the resulting calcium phosphate phases. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of the formed phases were performed using FTIR, XRD, and Rietveld refinement based on percolation experiments; ultrasound velocity and drilling resistance measure-ments on test specimens were used to assess the consolidating effect. The results indicate a preferential formation of brushite on gypsum, while inhomogeneous carbonate apatite is typically formed on calcite substrates; pure hydroxyapatite formation was likely not observed. The application primarily achieves surface passivation. The findings can be applied to a marble sculpture that was previously cleaned of gypsum crusts by laser. |
