Quirin Amadeus Herzinger: An Originally Black Cabinet from the 17th Century- Attempts to Reconstruct the Color Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: Abstract
The present work deals with an originally black cabinet from the 17th century. The object comes from private ownership. In its current state, the outer sides are transparent and the in-ner sides are ebony-colored. Attempts are being made to reconstruct the black coloration on the basis of examinations of the black interior. On the basis of the findings, suitable formula-tions will be determined as part of historical source research, which will then be reproduced on test pieces. The test series with the different formulations are carried out for comparison with and without pre-treatment and then subjected to artificial ageing. The results are finally evalu-ated by means of a subjective, optical analysis and objectively confirmed by color and gloss level measurements. The aim of the study is to demonstrate a restoration procedure that can be used to approximately reconstruct the black coloration of the cabinet´s exterior using the historical formulas. This should enable an authentic appearance to be preserved or recon-structed if the object is restored at a later date.

Keywords: Augsburg cabinet, black coloration, reconstruction experiments, findings, artificial aging, color value and gloss level measurement, diagrams.
