| Abstract: | This diploma thesis presents an examination based on material and conservation science and cultural history of two reverse glass objects from Tyrol featuring reverse glass etching and inlaid portraits from 1812, which are part of the collection from the Tiroler Volkskunstmuseum. The comprehensive material and condition analysis serves as the foundation for both the investigation of the causes and consequences of the fluctuating reception that reverse glass art has experienced, as well as for the conservation treatment itself. The latter focuses primarily on one of the painted layers on glass, which shows signs of adhesion failure and resulting material loss. A conservation strategy is developed with the aim of preventing further deterioration by combining preventive and conservation measures. The conducted deliberations in this study shed light on the complex field between the historical undervaluation of a particular art form and the potential of conservation science to contribute to a reassessment of its perception. |
