| Abstract: | At the beginning of this study, the Großenlüder altarpiece in the parish church of St. George in Großenlüder near Fulda had scarcely been examined from an art historical and art technological perspective. A research project (2012-2015) conducted by the universities of Marburg, Frankfurt, and Osnabrück compiled several theories and hypotheses regarding the dating and provenance of the Großenlüder altarpiece, which had been developed by various art historians over the past decades. This research project laid the foundation for further investigations and significantly contributed to the understanding of the art historical and technological importance of the altarpiece. The focus of this study is on the art historical classification and detailed analysis of the iconographic program of the Großenlüder altarpiece, which represents a remarkable rarity. Additionally, both the support and the paint layers are examined technologically to reveal commonalities in the design techniques of the individual altarpiece elements. This allows for the hypothesis that they originally belonged to an ensemble. Finally, a conservation concept and a recommendation for monitoring the future exhibition in the so-called Carolingian Chapel are proposed. |
