In 2012, laboratory analysis of a sample from a painted over and almost completely obscured sgraffito in the vestibule (built in 1952) of the St. Maria in Capitol in Cologne drew the attention of the LVR-Amt für Denkmalpflege im Rheinland (Rhineland Agency for Historic Preservation) to this decorative technique. Genuine sgraffiti in the Rhineland are rare and primarily date from the late nineteenth century; however, the 1920s and 1950s/60s saw an increased use of the technique once again. Among these later works can be found both true sgraffiti (plaster layers in solid colors) as well as mixed-media works (stucco inlays and applications of paint). Since the buildings with sgraffito decorations from the post-war reconstruction period are often not subject to historic preservation requirements, many sgraffito works have been painted over or removed in renovation projects. The sgraffito in St. Maria in Capitol was, however, exposed and restored. By chance, the creator of the sgraffito was also able to be identified, which now allows this work to be presented in relation to other works of the artist.
